Efficient, sustainable fermentation technology will be central to the success of the emerging bio-based economy. However, making fermentation processes economically viable depends, among other things, on developing highly selective downstream extraction processes that keep waste streams to a minimum. One piece of the puzzle has now been developed via an ISPT collaboration between Purac, DSM, TU Eindhoven, TNO, Wageningen university and Syncom: the development of a cost-efficient process for easily recovering acidic or base fermentation products.
